What a purely sweet deck! I bought this for my son for his 11th birthday. He is always interested in my tarot cards and also loves anything fantasy. This deck is perfect. I love that it follows the RWS system, so it's easy for me to help him translate and I also love that the images are gorgeous and meaningful while still being "G rated" ;) Thank you!
I like the art well enough, but find the symbolism - and the accompanying book - to be very restricted for those who are not very invested in a Celtic-Wiccan style of Paganism. Frequently, the guidebook listed characterizations and associations for what the characters were doing or why that I couldn't see the art at all, and it referenced patterns or symbology that isn't in the vocabulary of someone outside of that specific practice. If you're willing to find your own meanings from the art - and I definitely think there's enough to it do so - then you'll like it a lot! If you're new and want the help of the book, make sure you're interested in researching the specific lens the creators used/created.Overall feeling of the deck reminds me of looking at images/scenes from a world of stories, such as the Dragon Riders of Pern stories, and taking away knowledge/themes from those scenes. (Different from other decks I've had, which feel more like specific cards have their own energies, rather than just 'represent' situations in which certain themes would be telling or important.)
I was drawn to this deck but held off getting it because the Wands and Swords are elementally reversed (Wands = air / Swords = fire) from how I like to read them. I thought that would be a problem for me in interpreting the cards. But eventually I decided the artwork was so compelling that I would get them anyway and try to work around it. To my surprise, I found the images still work fine with my preferred RWS association of Swords as air / Wands as fire. If you are holding off getting this deck for the same reason, I think you will also find that it is not the problem you anticipate. The images are absolutely charming and the dragons all have expressive personalities. I really enjoy working with this deck.
I just received this deck and I am blown away! Not only is the artwork astoundingly beautiful, the scenes depicted add another level of understanding of the cards for me. I read using Kristoffer Hughes’ Celtic Tarot, and will probably continue to do so, but this is the first deck (I have over a dozen Tarot and Oracle decks) that may tempt me to use as a primary in some cases. Can’t wait to try it out!Even if you don’t read cards, but you love dragons, you’ll like this deck. So many different dragons, not only in size and shape, but in temperament. So expressive, embodying what the card stands for. For example, each of the aces has the cutest babies hatching—but each suit is depicted in an appropriate for the suit setting.
The imagery is absolutely amazing! The book was an excellent companion to the deck. The meanings of some cards differ slightly from the "traditional" meanings of the cards, but they are still pretty spot-on. The only two "cons" are 1) I wish the cards were of a bit higher quality. They are not "laminated" so it's easier to bend them when shuffling, so handle with care! And 2) I wish it had come with a form-fitting box for the cards. The "filler" for the box is what is currently housing the cards, but it's an oversized box so the cards tend to shift a bit when being moved. However, all in all, I'm EXTREMELY happy with the deck, and if you've read any of Conway's books, these cards will help you visualize a lot of what is discussed in those books.
